The Faculty of Engineering and Technology of the University of Guyana (UG) has received the first international accreditation for the Associate of Science in Petroleum Engineering and the Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the London-based International Energy Institute, the UG said on Sunday.

The University of Guyana hosted the five-member accreditation review visit and team in February when the favorable oral report was issued prior to the formal notification to the university recently.

The University of Guyana began offering programs in Petroleum Engineering in partnership with the University of Trinidad and Tobago in the 2017/2018 academic year. The program graduated two batches in the associate program and the first batch of thirty (30) in the bachelor’s program last November. The energy, oil and gas programs are among the most in-demand new programs at the Faculty of Engineering and also attract a large number of young women.

The accreditation exercise was led and implemented by Dean Verlyn Klass, who also heads the programme, together with Assistant Dean Basheer Khan and Prof. Neal Alleyene from UTT.

Achieving international accreditation for the program ensures graduates of international mobility and stronger recognition for their degrees. As part of its forward-looking blueprint, the University of Guyana has set high targets for quality assurance in teaching and learning and several new accreditation exercises have been undertaken in addition to others already achieved.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paloma Mohamed, Vice Vice Chancellors and the senior management team of the University of Guyana congratulate the faculty and students on achieving this important milestone. Graduates of Guyana’s petroleum programs are in high demand and are employed within five (5) months of graduation, if not sooner.

The University of Guyana is currently tailoring its program offerings to the national, regional and international development context. The University’s application process for the 2024/2025 academic year is currently open. The degrees offered by the University of Guyana are internationally recognized, marketable and affordable.
