Mondelez reports notable gains on ESG targets

Mondelēz International has reported significant gains with the release of its latest Snacking Made Right report, writes Neill Barston.

As the company explained, the annual survey showed clearly defined gains against environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities.

According to the company, the report demonstrates its continued efforts to build a more sustainable snack business, focused on offering the right snack, at the right time, in the right way.

Additionally, as the company noted, this year’s report is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to provide our stakeholders with transparent, measurable information about our ESG objectives, policies, initiatives and programs.

Key elements of this year’s progress include advocating for mindful snacking; combating climate change through science-based targets, including obtaining SBTi validation for our roadmap to net-zero emissions reductions; expanding our signature Cocoa Life purchasing program; promoting diversity, equality and inclusion; and prioritizing collaboration to help drive lasting, sector-wide change.

“I am incredibly proud of our work in 2023 to continue to meet changing consumer preferences and deliver strong results while making meaningful progress on our ESG priorities,” said Dirk Van de Put, Chairman and CEO of Mondelēz International. “We have made this progress despite persistent global inflation and economic uncertainty, which is a testament not only to the strength of our iconic brands, but also to our focused and strategic approach to sustainable growth.”

The company’s approach to moving forward is two-fold: starting with transforming its business operations, including working closely upstream and downstream across supply chains, while taking a leading role in industry and sector partnerships aimed at driving collaboration and collective action.

Over the past year, the company has made significant progress toward our 2025 goals, including:

-Evolving our approach to conscious snacking by improving nutritional and ingredient profiles, promoting active lifestyles and empowering consumers to make more conscious eating choices.

-Scale up regenerative agriculture practices in Cocoa Life, its signature sourcing program, to help reduce deforestation and contribute to Scope 3 carbon reductions.

Reducing climate impact through tangible measures, including transitioning to renewable energy sources in many of our production facilities, and sourcing almost half of the electricity at production sites from renewable energy sources, up from more than 40% in 2022.

“This work creates value for our company and helps enable our future growth by making our business more resilient,” said Christine Montenegro McGrath, SVP, Chief Impact and Sustainability Officer.

“Looking ahead, we want to further sharpen, strengthen and accelerate our impact on our priority areas. We are also focused on developing to meet ever-increasing regulatory requirements and remain committed to transparency in sharing our progress. I am grateful for the passion, drive and ownership that Mondelēz International team members bring to their work every day as we continue to create positive impact at scale.”
